On the Sacraments, On the Mysteries, On Repentance
Three works of St Ambrose of Milan on the sacraments of initiation and on penance. In On the Sacraments and On the Mysteries the bishop explains to the newly baptized, in the week after Easter, the rites they have just received: baptism, the anointing, and the Eucharist. In the two books On Repentance he defends against the Novatians the Church's power to forgive every sin.
The Benedictine Latin text from Migne's Patrologia Latina is printed in full, with the English translations of T. Thompson (1919) and H. de Romestin (1896) facing the Latin throughout, section by section, together with the translators' notes. Readers with some Latin can follow Ambrose in the original, while those new to the language can follow the English alongside it. The Catholic Encyclopedia's article on St Ambrose introduces his life and times, and H. de Romestin's introductions open On the Mysteries and On Repentance.
Includes a full table of chapters.
For those preparing to receive the sacraments and those who teach them, students of Latin, seminarians, religious, clergy, and Catholics who wish to encounter the Fathers in their own words.
