Vita sancti Martini

The Life of St Martin, with the Letters and the Dialogues

The life of St Martin of Tours, the soldier who divided his cloak with a beggar at Amiens and became the unwilling bishop of Tours, as written by his friend Sulpicius Severus while Martin still lived. Also included are the three letters concerning Martin’s death and the Dialogues, which set his deeds beside those of the monks of Egypt.

Karl Halm’s 1866 critical text is printed in full, with Alexander Roberts’s English translation facing the Latin throughout, section by section, together with Roberts’s notes. Readers with some Latin can follow Sulpicius in the original, while those new to the language can follow the English alongside it. St John Henry Newman’s Martin and Maximus, from The Church of the Fathers, provides a further introduction to Martin and his times.

Includes a full table of chapters and an index of names.

For students of Latin, seminarians, religious, clergy, and Catholics who wish to encounter the Fathers and the lives of the saints in their own words.
