Βίος Ἀντωνίου
The Life of Saint Antony
A Greek Reader of Athanasius, with Notes in Greek
The life of Antony, the father of monks: a young Egyptian who heard the Gospel in church, gave away all he had, and withdrew into the desert. There he fought demons, healed the sick, and counseled emperors and pilgrims, becoming a model for monastic life in both East and West.
Saint Athanasius of Alexandria wrote the Life of Antony soon after the saint's death in 356, and it has been read in Greek ever since. This edition gives the complete Greek text of the Patrologia Graeca, newly read from the 1857 printing and divided into its ninety-four chapters. In keeping with the natural method, the notes in the margin are entirely in Greek. Harder words are explained by the words they come from, by words of like meaning, or by a short sentence from the New Testament, the Septuagint or other early Christian and Greek writers.
With fifteen engravings from Antonio Tempesta's Life of Saint Antony (1598), an index of names and an index of words.
This reader is written for those who have completed a first year of New Testament or Koine Greek and want to grow in fluency through comprehensible input drawn from authentic Christian texts. It suits independent learners, homeschool families, classrooms, and Orthodox and Catholic Christians who wish to meet the Fathers and saints in their own language.
